Drop in Pottery Memberships

Our Drop In Memberships are designed for students who have completed the relevant training and can confidently work independently within the studio. Book a session.

Memberships are available for Handbuilding (Clay), Glazing, and Wheel Throwing, with many members holding one, two, or all three licences.

By obtaining a membership licence, you have demonstrated that you understand the studio layout, equipment, processes, and safety procedures, allowing you to work without direct tutor assistance.

Before attending, please check the studio calendar and book your session through the Drop In Member Pottery Booking system in The Pottery Hub.

General Rules for All Members

All members must:

  • Check the studio calendar and book into an available session before attending.

  • Collect any clay purchased online or use your already purchased clay and set up a workspace on arrival.

  • Work independently without requiring tutor assistance.

  • Recycle leftover clay by either taking it home or placing it into the recycling buckets located in the kitchen area (light clay & darker clay).

  • Allow sufficient time for cleaning and packing up before the end of the booked session.

  • Respect other users, classes, and businesses operating within Clay & Cotton as other creative hubs may be running classes while you are working.

  • Your membership is given based on trust, please respect this.

Studio Materials and Equipment

  • Studio tools are available for member use and should be returned after use.

  • Water sinks are available for cleaning tools and equipment, use the last small sink to wash brushes, tools do not need washing.

  • Underglazes stored on the silver racks are intended for use on fresh, damp greenware.

  • Underglazes stored on the glazing trays are intended for use on dry greenware or bisque fired items.

Firing Instructions

All members must leave a clear written note with their pottery and place their work on the Members Shelf.

Please indicate one of the following:

  • Bisque fire only – I will paint and/or glaze my own work.

  • Bisque fire and clear glaze – please complete the clear glazing for me.

  • Leave as greenware – work is not yet finished.

  • Clear instructions help us process your work correctly and avoid delays.

  • Please ensure you take photos of your work at each stage so you can identify what is yours accurately.

Clay Membership

Clay Membership allows independent handbuilding within the studio.

Clay Members follow all General Rules and may:

  • Handbuild independently within booked sessions.

  • Purchase a block of clay when making a booking and pay for the finished weight when work is completed.

  • Purchase clay options that include all associated firing and glazing costs.

  • If you require more clay, please select one of the pre-packaged amounts to purchase and pay via phone with an online order and help yourself or ask someone in the shop to buy more via eftpos.

Members are responsible for cleaning their workspace and returning all tools after use.

Glazing Membership

Glazing Membership is available to members who have completed glazing training and demonstrated competency in studio glazing procedures.

Glazing Members can do everything available under Clay Membership and may also:

  • Glaze their own work independently.

  • Access approved studio glazing materials and equipment.

  • Prepare work correctly for firing following studio procedures.

All glazed work must be clearly labelled and accompanied by firing instructions before being placed on the Members Shelf.

Wheel Membership

Wheel Membership is available to members who have completed wheel training and demonstrated the ability to use the pottery wheels independently.

A Wheel Membership does not automatically include Clay or Glazing Memberships. Some members hold multiple licences and may use additional areas of the studio according to those memberships.

Wheel Members must:

  • Bring their own slops bucket and take all wheel slurry home or dispose of it as instructed during training.

  • Bring suitable containers or storage solutions if work will remain in the studio for trimming or further work.

  • Take unfinished work home if they are not returning the following day to trim.

  • Clean wheels, splash pans, tools, and surrounding work areas exactly as demonstrated during their induction.

Booking Time

Wheel bookings cover wheel usage only.

Please note that setup and cleanup time are not included in your booked wheel time. Members must allow sufficient time within their booking to set up, clean down, and leave the studio ready for the next user.

All wheel areas must be left clean and ready for immediate use by the next member or class.

Membership Licence Explained

Our Drop In Membership system is based on licences that recognise the skills and training you have completed within the studio.

Each licence is earned by attending the relevant class or training session and demonstrating that you can confidently work independently, follow studio procedures, and care for the equipment and workspace without tutor assistance.

You may hold one licence or a combination of licences depending on the training you have completed.

Clay Licence

A Clay Licence allows you to independently handbuild and create pottery within the studio.

You have demonstrated that you understand:

• Studio setup and procedures

• Clay handling and recycling processes

• Tool and equipment locations

• Workspace setup and cleanup requirements

Glazing Licence

A Glazing Licence allows you to independently glaze your own pottery.

You have demonstrated that you understand:

• Glazing procedures and studio expectations

• Appropriate use of underglazes and glazes

• Preparing work for firing

• Labelling and leaving firing instructions

A Glazing Licence is typically held alongside a Clay Licence but may also be obtained separately where appropriate.

Wheel Licence

A Wheel Licence allows you to independently use the pottery wheels during booked Drop In sessions.

You have demonstrated that you understand:

• Wheel setup and operation

• Clay management and slurry handling

• Trimming and storage procedures

• Wheel cleanup requirements

• Studio expectations for independent wheel use

A Wheel Licence does not automatically include Clay or Glazing Licences. Members must hold the relevant licences for each activity they wish to undertake.

Combining Licences

Many members hold multiple licences and enjoy access to several areas of the studio.

For example:

• Clay Licence only – Handbuilding

• Clay and Glazing Licences – Handbuilding and glazing

• Wheel Licence only – Wheel throwing

• Wheel and Glazing Licences – Wheel throwing and glazing
